Craigslist
Craigslist is great in a few select areas for select items.
If you live in Los Angeles and don't like craigslist, I don't blame you. This city is filled with lots of people and lots of scams. Those same people push their scams onto the internet. But the free section is still decent.
Well, cause its free. Keep your eyes peeled for what you need. Make a list of things, and search them once in a while on craigslist. If you're like me, you might want a free piano. Well most people don't think pianos are worth much. Especially because barely anyone plays them anymore. But for me and other musicians, its a freakin' gold mine. The trick to the CL free section is being quick, and ready. Don't flake out either. Let the poster know exactly when you can show up and commit.
